The Role of Fast Radial Diffusion in the Formation of the Energetic Electron Population of the Inner Belt

Abstract


A large flux ofgreater than 100 lulel/ clectrons rvas registered in the inner belt on lorv altitude satellitcs. The origin of the flux is discussed. It appears that slow radial diffusion ( Do = l0-r3 s-r ) gives a low probability for pwnetration of these electrons to small /, from the boundary of magnetosphere because of synehrotron radiation energy losses. It is found that they can enter into the inner belt region without such losses alter great magnetic storms when fast radial diffusion sometimcs takes placc. Two great storms on 8-9 Fcb., 1986 and March 24, 1991 and examples when one can directly observe a penctration of energetic electron fluxes into magnetosphere. The assumption about their Jovian origin is discussed.
