HIDROLOGIA ISOTÓPICA DE ÁGUAS SUBTERRÂNEAS NA REGIÃO DE CIPÓ – BA

Ivan S. Costa

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Isotopic hydrology of underground water in the region of Cipó – BA

It is presented a study of the dynamics of underground water of the Tucano Basin, in the region of Cipó – BA, utilizing the isotopic methodology, through the stable isotopes of the oxygen of the water and the dating with the carbon-14 method. The ages found in these waters varied from 1,800 to 30,000 years B.P., with the direction of the flow indicated by the trend to greater values of ages near the valley of the Itapicuru river. The content of the stable isotopes indicated an enrichment in heavy isotopes when compared with the data of present precipitation close to this regions. Nonetheless, the ancient waters had lower $δ^{18}$O than the recent one, showing that the regime of precipitation of the region was probably more intense, and/or that the evaporation influenced less due the lower temperature of that time. Chemical analyses showed that samples near of the faults of Cipó and Olindina possess higher concentration of dissolved ions than the waters of other points indicating that in these places the waters came from great depth, explaining the ocurrence of artesian well thermal waters.
