Abstract

ABSTRACT

Interpretation of gravity anomalies is important in the study of sedimentary basin. However, it presents some difficulties because gravimetric anomalies are produced by the sum of all effects due to every density contrast in the subsurface. To overcome this difficulty, we apply a regional-residual separation method, in order to isolate the effects to the regional sources (basement relief) from the effects of the residual sources (sediments). The interpretation of each component leads to a possible geometry for each type of source. The regional-residual separation method employed is the polynomial fitting, using a robust procedure to determine the coefficients of the polynomial fitted to the observations. This method is iterative and employs the least-squares fit as an initial approximation. The robust method minimizes the influence of observations having a great residual contribution in fitting the regional component. The regional component given by the regional-residual separation is transformed into a map of depths to the basement. This transformation is iterative, each iteration consisting of four stages. At the first stage, we calculate the regional component corrected to the effect of a base level, which is represented by a polynomial of order 1, initialized with null coefficients. The second stage consists in the downward continuation of the corrected regional component, which is presumably caused by a smooth interface separating two homogeneous media, representing the sediment-basement interface. At the third stage, the downward continued map is transformed into a map of interface depths refered to the downward continuation level. At the fourth stage, using independent information about the interface depth at a few points, we calculate at each point, the residual between the real and the computed depths to the basement. The iteration is controlled by a direct search method, which modifies the polynomial coefficients in order to minimize a norm of the residual vector computed at the fourth stage. As a result, we obtain the base level which best incorporates the a priori information about the depths of the regional sources. A map of absolute basement depths is therefore obtained. The residual component obtained by the regional-residual separation is transformed into an apparent density contrast map. This transformation consists of a linear inversion, producing estimates of the physical property of prismatic sources, presumably confined within a horizontal slab. The physical property is assumed to vary along the horizontal directions only. The performance of the regional-residual separation method was assessed using synthetic data, producing better results than the least-squares method. The performance of the regional component interpretation, was evaluated using synthetic data. The method produced interfaces close to the true structures. In the absence of a priori information about the regional source depths, it is necessary to know a priori the density contrast between the two media and the continuation level. On the other hand, when a priori information about the depths is available from boreholes, for example, both parameters can be estimated by selecting those which minimize a norm of the vector of residuals between the real and the computed depths at each point. In order to apply the residual interpretation method it is necessary that the depth to the top and the thickness of the slab which presumably contains the sources be known. However, tests using synthetic data showed that the horizontal outline of the sources may be obtained even when wrong assumptions are made about these two parameters. On the other hand, the ambiguity involving the depth to the top, the thickness and the apparent density contrast may be visualized at graphics involving these three parameters. Depending on the quality and quantity of a priori information about these parameters, quantitative or semi-quantitative interpretations may be performed. The sequence of methods described above was applied to gravity data from the Recôncavo Basin leading to the identification of the major regional structural basement features. A new strike-slip fault is evidenced by the residual gravity anomaly and the available geological information.
