Abstract

ABSTRACT

In the thesis, the hybrid ray-reflectivity method is applied to study seismic wave propagation in a medium containing a thin transition layer. The thin transition layer influences considerably the seismic wave field pro-pagating in the Earth's interior. There are two situations in which the influence of thin transition layer is rather drastic. The first situation is related to the waves reflected from a thin transition layer. The structure of the thin layer has a very expressive influence particularly on spectral properties of reflected waves. It also influences considerably the amplitude-distance curves of these waves. The second situation, even more important, is related to the waves reflected from a single interface, but with a high-velocity thin layer in the overburden. We can consider this high-velocity thin layer as a variation of a thin transition layer. The high-velocity thin layer, situated in the overburden, influences considerably the properties of such reflected waves. As the first situation was numerically studied and discussed in great detail by Cervený (1989), we shall concentrate here on the second problem, i.e., on the in-fluence of a high-velocity thin layer situated in an overburden on reflected seismic waves. We shall show that the standard ray method does not give reliable results in such situation. In many cases, seismic waves propagate through the high-ve-locity thin layer not along rays, but along non-ray paths (evanescent waves). The ray method cannot treat such situ-ation, but the hybrid ray-reflectivity method can. Using the ray-reflectivity method, we shall not only appreciate the accuracy of the ray method in such situation, but also in-vestigate the actual influence of the high-velocity thin layer situated in the overburden on the dynamic properties of re-flected waves. We also demonstrate that the hybrid ray-reflec-tivity method can be used without problems in the numerical modelling of seismic wave fields in complex 2-D structures containing thin transition layer (or high-velocity thin layer).
