Abstract

ABSTRACT

Influence of thin superficial layers on seismic data recorded on Earth's surface

The hybrid ray-reflectivity method is applied to the numerical modelling of seismic wave fields in laterally varying layered models containing a thin near-surface layer. The computations within the laterally varying layered model are performed by the ray method, but the thin near-surface layer is attacked locally by the matrix methods. The thin layer need not be homogeneous, it may include arbitrary inner layering and it may slightly vary laterally. We can also consider a slight absorption in the whole model. All multiple reflections, including converted multiples within the thin near-surface layer, are automatically taken into account. In this procedure, we can consider low-velocity thin near-surface layers (weathering zone) and also near-surface high-velocity layers (permafrost). In the latter case, the hybrid algorithm will automatically include even certain important non-ray effects, such as the inhomogeneous waves, behind the critical angle of incidence on the near-surface layer. Numerical examples of hybrid ray-reflectivity seismograms for several models of the thin near-surface layer, with possible applications in seismic prospecting and in seismology, are presented. An inverse algorithm to remove the effects of a thin near-surface layer from computed (or recorded) seismograms at the Earth's surface is proposed. Such an inverse filter includes the so-called static corrections. There are four different filters: they correspond to incidentPandSwaves and to the recorded horizontal and vertical displacement components. The main problem in the application of the inverse procedure to recorded seismograms consists in the required knowledge of the structure of the thin near-surface layer, of the angle of incidence on the thin layer and of the elastic parameters of the structure close to the near-surface layer.
