CONEXÕES ENTRE A TSM DO ATLÂNTICO SUL E A CONVECÇÃO DE VERÃO SOBRE A AMÉRICA DO SUL: ANÁLISE OBSERVACIONAL

Abstract

A interação entre a temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) do Atlântico Sul e a convecção de verão sobre a América do Sul e áreas adjacentes é estudada através de Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP), Decomposição em Valores Singulares (SVD) e análise de compostos para o período de dezembro a fevereiro (DJF) de 1979 a 2001. Os dados usados de TSM são doComprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data(COADS),Outgoing Longwave Radiation from Climate Diagnostics Center(CDC) e campo de vento doNational Centers for Environment Prediction(NCEP)Reanalysis.Os resultados obtidos mostram que o primeiro modo das anomalias de TSM do Atlântico Sul determinado através de ACP está associado com a variabilidade da convecção sobre o sul do Nordeste Brasileiro (NEB) e sobre a porção tropical desta bacia no período de DJF de 1979 a 2001. Já as análises de SVD e compostos mostram que a convecção sobre a porção oceânica da Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS) e nas latitudes subtropicais da América do Sul está associada com as anomalias positivas de TSM sobre o Atlântico Sul.

ABSTRACT

The interaction between the sea surface temperature (SST) over the South Atlantic Ocean and the summertime convection over the South America and adjacent areas is studied by Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Singular Values Decomposition (SVD) and composites analysis. The dataset used are: SST from Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data (COADS), Outgoing Longwave Radiation from Climate Diagnostics Center (CDC) and wind field from National Centers for Environment Prediction (NCEP) Reanalysis to the period of December-January-February (DJF) from 1979 to 2001. The results of this work show that the SST over the South Atlantic Ocean is associated with the summertime convection variability over the southern Northeast of Brazil and tropical South Atlantic. The analysis of Singular Values Decomposition and composite analysis show that the convection over the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) is associated with positive anomalies SST over the South Atlantic.
