Abstract

ABSTRACT. We present an integrated geophysics investigation (2D seismic reflection and gravimetric and magnetometric potential data). The objective of the study is to assess Pernambuco Basin’s onshore and offshore regional context, in particular the crustal continent-ocean transition at the limits of the Pernambuco Plateau. Potential data was generated through satellite gravimetric and magnetometric data as well as four integrated seismic sections. This data bank included data available from the Brazilian Exploration and Production Data Bank (BDEP – ANP) studied by research institutions in onshore region of the basin and satellite data studies (GRACE and TOPEX). Data processing was made using programs using frequency filters to highlight observed anomalies. Three large tectonic domains were observed. The Internal Basin, being straight and parallel to the rift axis; an external structural high which separates the Internal Basin of the Pernambuco Plateau Basin; and the Pernambuco Plateau Basin which extends until the limit with the oceanic basin to the East. The Internal Basin, which occupies part of the coastal zone, can be further divided into two sub-basins, the Piedade to the North, and the Cupe, to the South. The results also allow for an estimation to be made regarding the limits of the Plateau Basin, providing information regarding its geology. It was possible to identify large structures in the onshore and offshore portion, such as the Itapuama Low, the External Plateau Low, the Tamandaré Low, Maracatu High, Piedade Graben, Cabo de Santo Agostinho High, Cupe Graben, Maragogi High, the Pernambuco Shear Zone, the Itamaracá High, Gaibu High and the Sirinhaém and Maragogi Grabens(?). Analysis based on the Ridel kinematic model was undertaken, which showed the convergence of structures seen on the potential maps. It was possible to conclude that the extension of the Plateau Basin, estimated at the L1 limit of the residual gravimetric anomaly map, extends until circa 130-150 km from the coast. Furthermore, the sedimentary cover thickness was estimated at approximately 9000 m in the Tamandaré Low, Southwest of the plateau.
